The internet has changed the distribution of porn so quickly that the word “centerfold” is now archaic and will soon fall out of popular lexicon. My favorite websites now post updates with new models at least once a week, and sometimes I find myself having to download and save these men for later viewing. When magazines used to dole out men, there was only one centerfold model per month; and he was a prize whose pages you would guard, pore over and revisit time and again.
At the risk of dating myself, I still recall the times when I felt such a rush of excitement and anticipation each month as I purchased my copy of Playgirl Magazine from the local bookstore. Of course, I would also take the opportunity to grab copies of Men, Freshmen and any other glossy gay porn monthly with a handsome hunk on the cover while I was at the counter.
Some of the models I would discover were actually porn stars or would later become porn stars, but many of the men were “one-hit-wonders” whom I could not find anywhere else, hard as I searched. They were fantasies created by the photographers and editors, and their physical allure were made even more irresistible with good lighting and poses. But the photos only showed so much and my imagination would have to do the rest.
The internet killed the magazines and their centerfold, but during the waning days of paper porn, some photographers were able to transition the models to solo videos. Within the video medium, these fantasy came to life and showed us much more than what the confines of a centerfold spread in a magazine would allow.
